The Salvation Army is committed to sustainable building and providing healthy, energy-efficient homes as part of a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of formerly homeless individuals served in Salvation Army permanent housing projects. With the support of our dedicated team of funders, architect, and contractors, The Salvation Army Donald and Priscilla Hunt Apartments at Bell Oasis is aiming to achieve a LEED For Homes GOLD rating. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification program, providing third-party verification that a building or community incorporates strategies aimed at reducing waste, increasing energy and water efficiency, and thoughtfully locating the project, therefore, reducing carbon emissions, attentively utilizing our natural resources, and improving indoor environmental quality.
The Salvation Army Donald and Priscilla Hunt Apartments at Bell Oasis incorporates the following LEED features:
- utilizes water, energy, and material resources efficiently in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide cost-saving benefits to residents
- structures and units designed with durability and occupant comfort in mind, including ample lighting in units and common areas, window overhangs to block harmful sun and let in beneficial light (depending on time of day and season), and careful building orientation to deflect heat gain and glare, yet let in natural light and air
- energy-efficient light fixtures
- ENERGY STAR refrigerators and ceiling fans
- low-flow toilets, showers, and faucets
- drought tolerant plants, hydrozoning, and high-efficiency irrigation
- large amounts of vegetation and other surfaces aiding in water infiltration assists with site storm water management
- grey water system to convert laundry water to landscape watering
- cool roof (reflects more sunlight and absorbs less heat than standard roof) and renewable energy (photovoltaic panel array) technology
